General Motors has started a bike sharing program at its Technical Center in Warren, Mich. that not only stands to help thousands of employees be more productive and healthier, but is also being viewed internally as a way to start looking beyond the century-old business model of selling one car to one person.

With 19,000 employees working in 61 buildings spread across 330 acres, GM’s Technical Center isn’t exactly easy to navigate. To get from one building to the next, employees must either walk, take shuttle buses, or drive their own cars and hunt for parking in congested lots.

Many people could be wasting 30 to 60 minutes a day just hunting for parking on the sprawling campus, said Wade Bryant, GM design manager, in a video on GM’s YouTube channel that announced the bike-sharing initiative. “…My typical bike ride is somewhere between three and five minutes. It’s easy, it’s convenient, it’s nice getting out, feeling a little breeze.”
