About the Summit
The transportation sector needs a new type of convening, so we are overhauling our annual summit to convene change leaders in a more effective and strategic way. We’re redesigning it from the ground up. Our new program and approach will intentionally catalyze collaboration by building the understanding, trust, and inspiration that propels communities to create an equitable, sustainable mobility ecosystem.
In 2025, we will bring change leaders together across sectors to deepen relationships, to build a Change Community — a more connected and cohesive network accelerating the shift to people-centered mobility.
How is the New Shared Mobility Summit different?
- We will invert the power. We know there will always be more expertise and knowledge among the attendees than in any speakers panel. Instead of one-way lectures, our Summit will center on questions, conversations and discussions.
- We won’t have speakers. We will have active participants and resource persons. Participants will share, ask, and interrogate. Resource persons will reflect and guide. The most important place will not be the podium; it will be the center of the room in the middle of substantial and challenging discussions.
- We will break walls and build community. Our Summit will not be limited to the two days participants will come together in person. We will design for engagement and learning before and after the in-person event. Some in the form of small groups. We will host online conversations and build virtual communities to mobilize real-world impact.
- If we have the right support, we won’t charge conference fees and will provide travel stipends. Travel and registration costs are prohibitive for many community organizations and public sector leaders. This is an equity problem. It perpetuates under-representation and limits the voices of BIPOC and marginalized communities.
We believe the moments when change leaders come together are strategic. Convenings are opportunities to connect, strengthen partnerships, build momentum, and accelerate local, metropolitan, and regional action so that ALL people have access to safe, reliable, and affordable transportation options, even if they don’t own a car.
Challenging our fossil-fueled, car-centric 20th-century mobility systems has become even more urgent. Pilots in the last decade demonstrated the demand for new shared mobility services. The work going forward is to continue increasing the availability of shared options and public transit and integrating all the various services to reduce car dependence.
Success requires building alignment, cohesion, and trust between multiple stakeholders at the local, metropolitan, and regional levels. The coordination requires deep partnerships across teams, agencies, companies, and sectors.
And yet, as a sector, we continue to convene transportation conferences that use stale models of keynotes, speaker panels, and expert talks. These old approaches don’t build urgency or develop the working relationships, deep multi-sector connections or the networked solidarity our towns and cities need to fight climate change, advance equity, and strengthen community.
