SUMMARY:Driverless Cars: Envisioning The City of the Future
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of a series about how autonomous vehicles will impact our lives and the cities we live in\n\nRegister Today \nDriverless cars\, otherwise known as autonomous vehicles (AVs)\, will be part of our future cities. This session will look at how AVs will inspire transformative changes in transportation and surely alter the urban landscape. How will neighborhoods and downtown streets look and function differently with AVs in the mix? Will AVs free up land for uses beyond parking and roadways? Will they encourage a new type of urban sprawl or facilitate more livable communities? \nWe invite you to join the Environmental Law & Policy Center\, the Metropolitan Planning Council and the Shared-Use Mobility Center for a roundtable discussion from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday\, January 30\, featuring experts discussing how AVs may influence development patterns and urban design. \nRoundtable Panelists: \n\nMary Wisniewski (moderator)\, Transportation Reporter and Getting Around Columnist\, Chicago Tribune\nMarshall Brown\, founder of Marshall Brown Projects architecture and urban design studio\, Associate Professor at Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture in Chicago. Brown creates visions for the future of urban environments and the integration of architecture\, infrastructure and landscape.\nKelley Coyner\, Senior Fellow at the Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University in Fairfax Virginia. Coyner is an innovative transportation leader\, practitioner and researcher who helps communities harness transformative automated vehicle technology.\nChristopher Hall\, Urban Strategy Leader in the City Design Practice at Skidmore\, Owings & Merrill in Chicago. Hall has worked in cities and regions around the globe on the implementation of transformative master planning and urban design projects.\n\nThe event will begin promptly at noon. Doors open at 11:45 a.m. Lunch will be served. \nRegister Today \n\nAbout the Series \nDriverless cars—otherwise known as autonomous vehicles—promise increased travel safety\, efficiency and accessibility. But how will this affect economic development\, land use and the environment? How will these vehicles function in highly complex urban areas? How will they impact life in cities where bikes\, buses and pedestrians share the streets? How will they function in a range of contexts including downtown areas\, suburbs and rural areas? What policies will help ensure AVs improve the quality of life for all\, not some? The Environmental Law & Policy Center\, the Metropolitan Planning Council and the Shared Use Mobility Center present a series of events to generate discussion and begin to address these questions. \n\nThe Public Sector’s Role (November 2\, 2017)\nEnvisioning the City of the Future (January 30\, 2018)\nHow Will AVs Influence Our Infrastructure? (Spring 2018)\n\nMPC thanks Wight & Company for their generous sponsorship of this series.
