5W + H fact sheet
The Shared-Use Mobility Center (SUMC) is a nonprofit research and consulting organization advancing people-centered transportation systems. Founded in 2014, SUMC connects and empowers change leaders working to fight climate change, advance equity, and strengthen communities through equitable, safe, sustainable, affordable, and reliable mobility options. Our work spans applied research, capacity building, technical assistance, and trusted convening across the public, private, nonprofit, philanthropic, and academic sectors. We have helped secure over $90 million for mobility innovation and served as a technical advisor on nearly 150 pilot projects nationwide.
Who
The Shared-Use Mobility Center serves change leaders across public agencies, community-based organizations, private companies, philanthropic organizations, and academic institutions. Our audiences include practitioners implementing people-first transportation solutions, policymakers setting mobility agendas, funders investing in systems change, and communities working to transform transportation from the ground up. We work with local leaders and organizations in 170+ communities across the country.
What
SUMC advances people-centered mobility systems through three core strategies: deepening knowledge through applied research and insights; equipping change leaders with tools, training, technical assistance, and consulting services; and connecting communities through peer-to-peer networks, convenings, and national events. Our work addresses shared mobility in all its forms, including public transportation, ride-hailing, car-sharing, microtransit, bikeshare, scooters, paratransit, and shared mobility infrastructure. We have developed over 1,500 publicly available resources and tools to empower the sector.
When
SUMC was founded in 2014 as a clearinghouse for information about the emerging shared mobility industry. Over the past decade, we have evolved into a respected thought leader and trusted partner, adapting our work as the shared mobility landscape has matured and as the urgency of climate change and equity crises has intensified.
What
SUMC operates nationally and internationally, with active work in 170+ communities across the United States. We serve as a long-term partner of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and have worked with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Transportation Research Board (TRB). Our reach extends across public, private, nonprofit, and academic sectors.

Why
Current transportation systems prioritize cars over people, creating systems that are unjust, unsafe, and unsustainable. Car-centric infrastructure contributes to 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions and causes nearly 1.2 million deaths worldwide each year, disproportionately affecting people of color, older adults, and youth. SUMC exists to shift this paradigm by connecting and empowering changemakers building people-centered mobility systems that reduce emissions, advance equity, and strengthen communities.
How
SUMC multiplies the effect of individual actions to accelerate systems change by deepening knowledge through research, equipping change leaders with tools and technical assistance, and connecting them through peer networks and events. We work to inspire, equip, and catalyze connections through our convenings, research, social media, newsletter, and the Mobility Learning Center.
