Shared Mobility Rocks and we recorded it all
On March 3, 2021, the Shared-Use Mobility Center was the U.S. headliner of Shared Mobility Rocks, the (un)conventional symposium on shared mobility organized by our SHARE-North Partners that brings the latest shared mobility approaches and practices to the world stage. In a 24hr, nonstop marathon from March 3-4, the event traveled around the globe, stopping in Chicago right after Lima, Peru, and before Melbourne, Australia.

We led two 90 minute sessions: Innovative Approaches to Micromobility that included 1-slide-only presentations on how agencies feel about micromobility (hint: it’s a crucial part of the transportation ecosystem) and a demo of the Micromobility Policy Atlas, and Decarbonizing Transportation that included a Beyond Electrification Jukebox, and inspiring, frank conversations about how transportation can truly move the climate needle.

Mobility Justice

It’s time for a “feminist climate renaissance”, declares the Natural Resources Defense Council in this article that calls attention to the gender and racial disparities that women—specifically women of color—face in the wake of climate change.

Grist sits down with former Georgia state rep. and gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, a climate activist since her days as a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency intern, to talk transportation equity, environmental injustice, and why voting rights is imperative for climate action.

Digital redlining has hobbled US families in low-income communities of color by leaving them with limited access to reliable high-speed internet. Finally, a new coalition of city leaders are urging the FCC to make it right.

VIDEO: From community action to transit policy, nine bold city leaders recall their advocacy efforts for sustainable, equitable transportation—which led to $60 billion in federal COVID-19 relief funding—in this episode of the Federal Mobility Policy Update.

Ridehailing/Carsharing/Carpooling

Chinese ridehailing behemoth Didi Chuxing is going public, eyeing an IPO that could bring a $100 billion valuation with it that could impact one of two stock markets: New York or Hong Kong.

New data from telecom giant Ericsson proves a common reality that while people may support the concept of multimodal shared mobility travel, they are hesitant to make the switch themselves, and if you live in a car-dependent area, this is even more likely to be the case.

How are on-demand transit partnerships faring in cities? Research from Uber suggests that lower-density, lower-income areas have benefited the most from ridehail-transit agency partnerships and the company urges cities to put more “emphasis on not just serving office workers, but also serving people who are commuting elsewhere”.

Bikesharing & Micromobility

Lime wants you to know that it understands your app-overload so it’s working on a new feature called app-less riding that allows users to snap a scooter photo and pay by Apple Pay or Google Pay.

Partly solar-powered and all-the-way ad-funded micromobility chargers will soon be powering the streets of Miami through a new program where charging tech company Swiftmile installs stations in spaces operated by the Miami Parking Authority.

It looks like the 2021 Spring/Summer scooter wave will be no tsunami as city leaders, advocates, and planners, learning from last year’s overwhelm, are ready and waiting with fresh regulations and data-driven management.

Transit

Thanks to House Reps. Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Andy Levin (D-Mich.) and Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.), the $500 billion Build Green Act is making its way through Congress with funds to electrify public transit—prioritizing the front-line and vulnerable communities who have suffered the worst of climate pollution’s effects.

Unthwarted by Gov. Devine’s desire to cut to public transit in last month’s budget proposal, the Ohio House of Representatives is pushing for $70 million per year in funding (similar to last year’s budget) to invest in the future of bus and train services for residents.

One thing DHL will not be delivering is direct emissions in NY and CA with the deployment of 89 new EV vans—part of a larger company decarbonization effort—after a successful pilot using nine Electric Ford Transit vans last year.

Technology

If you’re an Arlington, TX resident, get ready to see more self-driving cars shuttle around town through a new city-owned, autonomous vehicle service piloted by the FTA and operated by Via.

Easily readability in even the harshest light, low energy consumption, and a tough exterior make ePaper an eco-friendly and practical win that transit agencies can’t wait to outfit on connected transit signage at bus stops, rail stations, and transit facilities.

Your future Metrolinx train trip in Toronto might be autonomous now that startup Invision AI and safety and security company Thales is currently testing driverless Metrolinx Go trains in the region as part of a six-month pilot program.

Sustainability

Close behind the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package, the Biden administration is gathering steam for a $3 trillion economic stimulus bill that would “improve quality of life” by focusing on infrastructure, education, and workforce development.

“We’re better off if our decisions revolve not around the car but around the human being,” insisted Secretary Buttigieg on the importance of people-centered planning for safe travels by foot, bike, or mobility device at a keynote during South by Southwest.

Buffalo, NY saw small but significant changes in 2017 when it eliminated parking requirements, namely that existing spaces became a shared commodity while the city saw more transit-oriented housing including a rehabilitated mixed-use building.
