INDIANAPOLIS – The city’s bike-share program is off to a speedy start, serving up nearly 30,000 rides and surpassing expectations in its first two months.
Program managers, meanwhile, are learning valuable lessons about where people like to ride and what types of mechanical issues need to be addressed as the urban initiative gains momentum.
“We knew it would be popular but didn’t expect it to catch on so fast,” said Marc Lotter, a spokesman for Mayor Greg Ballard. “It’s exceeding expectations, and we are getting calls to make it citywide.”
Indianapolis Cultural Trail Inc. has sold 9,926 day passes and 1,026 yearly passes so far, said Dan Remington, customer service representative. The day passes cost $8, and the yearly passes are $80. They can be bought with credit cards at 25 rental station kiosks downtown near the trail.
Formally called Indiana Pacers Bikeshare, it has generated an estimated $161,000 in revenue since debuting in April.
