The Shared-Use Mobility Center (SUMC) was awarded $75,000 from Uber to create an online information hub and a series of media resources about the most up to date information on two- and three-wheeled fleets. SUMC and its partners hope providing current statistics and counts, implications, challenges and opportunities will lead to better policies and regulatory approaches, as well as investments for these mobility services.
Two-page information sheets highlighting specific topics around two- and three-wheelers, and an aggregated hub of information that expands on the information sheets to offer more depth and links to research and future resources will be published as part of this project.
“The two- and three-wheel fleets in shared mobility and popular transportation (or informal transportation) regularly move millions of people and goods, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East and North Africa, and South and Southeast Asia,” said Andrea San Gil León, executive director, Global Network for Popular Transportation. “The global shift to [electric vehicles] is also happening much more rapidly in the two- and three-wheel segment, in many cases, even without public sector support. It is happening with little media attention. These popular and affordable services are ignored or, at worst, despised by city leaders and policymakers. The impact, current and potential, is vast.”
Led by the Global Network for Popular Transport (GNPT), a project of SUMC, the goal is to make two- and three-wheeler services globally visible, both in their size and scope and the impact of their services in urban and rural transportation services. The project will solidify two- and three-wheelers as legitimate modes and fulfill crucial roles in urban mobility and access, especially of lower-income households.
