Fresh on SUMC’s Learning Center: New Case Study on The COMET
How can a transit agency more effectively serve people commuting at night or living in food deserts? Read more about how The COMET in South Carolina tailored its mobility services through developing innovative programs like The COMET On The Go! The in-depth case study includes an overview, interviews, challenges and lessons learned, and what’s next.

SURVEY: How do you use the Transportation Technical Assistance Coordination Library?
The Transportation Technical Assistance Coordination Library (TACL) helps users identify high-quality technical assistance on transportation coordination. The TACL Task Force is conducting a survey to better understand how users are accessing and using TACL to best meet the needs of those seeking resources. Please take 5 minutes and fill out the survey here.

And now for a Technical Assistance Success Story
Public transit users in Washington are hopping onto a new form of transportation—a ridehailing van called the Lynden Hop that promises to pick up passengers in 15 minutes. The one-year pilot is an Integrated Mobility Innovations (IMI) project funded by the FTA and receiving SUMC’s technical assistance. You can learn more bout SUMC’s work in the IMI Program on our site.

Mobility Justice

Chicago’s CTA is considering placing armed guards on select buses and trains to counter the violence, which has increased since the start of COVID-19, in a move that can lead to racial profiling and bias. Streetsblog makes the case for transit ambassadors as a better answer.

In Oakland, environmental racism has deep roots and long lasting effects. Middle schoolers are questioning these, including the highway that runs through their community.

A new study of segregation in cities and regions published by the University of California at Berkeley’s Othering & Belonging Institute found that the policies based on racial segregation—which determined a person’s lived environment—were a consequential factor in determining equitable access to health, education and mobility.

Ridehailing/Carsharing/Carpooling

What if public transit worked like a ridehailing app? The Routing Company is testing this in the Seattle area’s Bainbridge Island bus system with their new Ride Pingo app that drops riders off at their destination — and they say it’ll cheaper than existing ridehailing services.

Why own a car the old-fashioned way when Lynk & Co is offering memberships with a car built to share? Both your pocketbook and the planet will thank you.

The “No car, no job. No job, no car” dilemma is being address head on in Ohio’s Loraine County with a new electric car sharing program bringing reliable, clean mobility to those historically overlooked and immobilized.

Bikesharing & Micromobility

A new pilot program in Flanders, Belgium is bringing accessible bike-sharing to wheelchair users through electric wheelchair bike VeloPlus, which raises the question, Why isn’t this standard?

How do we solve the labor and equity issues popping up in the e-scooter world? SUMC’s Colin Murphy, research and consulting director, urges us to look at the role micromobility has integrating with transit systems to create multimodal networks that can cut carbon emissions and the dominance of single occupancy vehicles in the US.

Transit

Great news transit agencies: Optibus is offering a free 3-month license to adapt your planning and scheduling platforms to bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic, just make sure to apply by July 30.

You may soon be able ride the rails while leaving carbon emissions behind with BNSF testing a freight train with an experimental battery, and similar technology looks promising for US passenger rails.

Time to say goodbye to all that bus exhaust. A grand $182 million in funding is coming from the USDOT for low and no emissions buses and the facilities that support them, to a total of 49 projects in 46 states & territories.

Technology

Cars aren’t necessary to enjoy the outdoors in New Jersey with a new app that gives users public transportation options to green spaces.

First Transit is spreading its autonomous mobility wings via a new partnership with industrial AV technology developer Cyngn, whose autonomous stack technology can be used across a variety of transit applications including warehouses, shipping yards and airports.

Don’t worry when your shared car drives off on its own, a remote driver will take it from there. T-Mobile and carsharing company Halo want to use teleoperated EVs to bring convenient carsharing to your doorstep.

Sustainability

Society has a lot to gain from fewer single-occupancy vehicles taking up valuable space in tight urban areas—the latest, according to CEO of The Traffic Group Wes Guckert, being the endless possibilities for retrofitting unused parking garages into mixed-use amenities such as aiding those experiencing homelessness.

REPORT: The Innovative Mobility Landscape: The Case of Mobility as a Service (MaaS), published by the International Transport Forum and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development reviews the changing global transportation landscape, the potential of MaaS, and the regulatory challenges in the way.

Keep this in mind the next time you press play, “Decades of movies, television, songs, and print media have contributed to establishing the relationship between the automobile and its driver—that is not unwound through technological sparkles and low prices, but requires alternative narratives that are even more seductive than the current ones.” – Bryan Boyer, Urban Technology at University of Michigan newsletter.
